British PM Flies out of Britain for Visit to Canada, US

British Prime Minister Tony Blair took off from London's Heathrow airport on Wednesday for North America where he is to hold talks with the Canadian and United States leaders.

Blair will first fly to Ottawa where he will meet his Canadian counterpart, Jean Chretien, and address parliament. It will be the first official bilateral visit by a British prime minister to Canada since 1988.

The British prime minister is expected to talk with Chretien the proposed US missile defense system, Europe's plans to create its own military force as well as Britain's upcoming election.

He will be in Ottawa for only one day and then fly to Washington to see new US President George W. Bush. The focus of his trip is his meeting on Friday with Bush at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland.

Blair will become the first European Union leader to call on Bush since he was elected president.

He is scheduled to return to London on Saturday.
