Taiwanese Spend US$8 Billion on Overseas Travel in 2000
Taiwan people spent a total of US$8.1 billion on overseas travel in 2000, marking the highest level in three years, according to reports reaching from Taipei on Wednesday.
The figure released by a major local bank in Taiwan Wednesday represented an increase of 709 million dollars over the total spent on travel abroad in 1999. Overseas business travel expenses totaled 1.98 billion dollars, while personal travel expenses amounted to 6.12 billion dollars, the bank said.
The bank's economic research department also revealed statistics showing that Taiwan's tourism industry had total earnings of 4.12 billion dollars in 2000, representing an increase of 547 million dollars over the previous year's level.
The income obtained from business travelers was 1.47 billion dollars, while income from individual travelers totaled 2.65 billion dollars.
