Chinese, Israeli FMs Discuss Mideast Peace Process over Phone

China hopes that the new Israeli government, now being formed, will continue to seek a solution to the Middle East issue through political talks, Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan said Wednesday.

At the request of Israeli Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-ami, Tang and his Israeli counterpart had a telephone conversation Wednesday, during which Ben-ami briefed Tang on the situation in the Middle East.

Tang said that the Israeli-Arab talks, especially the Israeli- Palestinian talks, made some positive progress under the administration of the Labor Party, and the achievements were hard won.

China hopes that the new Israeli government being formed will continue to stick to the strategic choice of resolving the Mideast issue through political talks, join efforts with other relevant parties, respect and implement agreements and understanding already reached to work for substantial progress in the Mideast peace process on the basis of the relevant resolutions of the United Nations and the principle of "land for peace," Tang said.

Tang stressed that China has always supported the Mideast peace process and has made efforts to push forward the process.

He said that China will continue to contribute to the in-depth development of the peace talks.

Ben-ami called China a good friend of the Mideast peace process, saying that China's voice is that of wisdom conducive to peace and stability in the Mideast region.
