Sri Lanka's Tiger Rebels Claim No Separate Tamil State Wanted

Sri Lanka's separatist Tamil Tiger rebels have claimed that they are fighting against government forces for the right and dignity of minority Tamils instead of an independent state for them.

This was learnt from Bishop Malcolm Ranjith at a press conference Tuesday.

Leaders of the Interreligous Group for Peace representing Buddhists, Muslims and Catholics in the island country met with representatives of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Wanni, the rebel headquarters in the north of the country on Monday.

The religious leaders said that they want to brief President Chandrika Kumaratunga on their meeting with the rebels and convey to her that the LTTE rebels hope that the government would remain in the peace process in the country.
