Egypt Calls for Lifting of UN Sanctions on IraqOsama al-Baz, top advisor to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, said on Tuesday that the world community should take "immediate" measures to lift the UN sanctions on Iraq.Baz, who was accompanying Mubarak on an official visit to Italy, told Radio Cairo that the suffering of the sanction-stricken Iraqi people should draw attention from the world community. "The priority for the world now is to end the suffering of the Iraqi people and not to worsen it," he said. The UN imposed economic sanctions on Iraq following its invasion of Kuwait in 1990. Egypt insists that the sanctions on Baghdad should by no means continue "indefinitely" and that it is high time for them to be lifted. Cairo and Baghdad, which cut off ties in 1991 after Egypt joined the international coalition force to evict Iraqi troops out of Kuwait, restored diplomatic relations last November at the level of charge d'affaires Over the last few days, Egypt repeatedly denounced as " unacceptable and unjustifiable" air strikes against Iraq by the United States and Britain Friday evening. U.S. and British warplanes bombed Iraqi communications and air defense targets in the south of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, killing two civilians and injuring 20 others.
