Sci-Tech Books Awarded

Some 150 books won the 12th China Book Award Tuesday, mostly books on science and technology.

The award, set up in 1987, is one of the most prestigious in China, and is highly recognized by the press circles and the public. More than 400 publishing houses recommended 1,291 best- sellers published during the period 1998-1999 to the appraisal committee.

According to Wu Jie, head of the committee, the winning science and technology books are of great variety, reflecting the government's encouragement for technological innovation.

Popular books for children won awards for their successful combination of knowledge and entertainment. Some lengthy books on history and culture also won awards.

Gong Xinhan, deputy head of the Department of Publicity of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said that the 12th China Book Award reflected the prosperity and healthy development of China's publishing industry.

He called for more high-quality books to be published to meet the public demand.
