HK Sets Up First Computer Emergency CenterThe Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) Tuesday announced the establishment of Hong Kong's first computer emergency response center to provide a centralized contact on security incident for local users.The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government earmarked a funding support totaling 10.7 million HK dollars (US$1.28 million) from its innovation and technology fund to set up the computer emergency response team coordination center, according to a senior HKPC official. "Along with the rapid development of the Internet and e-commerce, computer hacking has also been growing at a comparable pace," Thomas Tang, the HKPC's executive director, told a press conference. "The establishment of the center is therefore a matter of great urgency." Located at the HKPC building, the center will collect information relating to computer security issues such as latest viruses, security weakness and counter-measures, and disseminate to the public, the executive said. It will also maintain a website on security information, publish newsletter, organize awareness programs and training courses on information security issues, as well as conducting studies on the current information security status of Hong Kong, he added. The center will also forge strategic alliances with overseas organizations and apply for membership in the Form of Incident Response and Security Teams. |
