Volcanic Column Park OpensA park featuring huge volcanic columns in Tengchong county in southwest China's Yunnan Province was recently opened to visitors. The park houses numerous high-rise stone columns made up of condensed magma from volcanoes, or columnar joint, a term used by geologists. Tengchong County, which borders Myanmar, has 97 dormant volcanoes believed to be the most well preserved and complete in China. It hence has been described as a "museum of volcanoes." The youngest volcano in Tengchong is 7,000 years old. China is one of the countries where volcanoes remain most active. It has three volcanic column sites. Apart from the one in Tengchong, the other two are located in Nanning, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, and Mount Emei in Sichuan Province. Analysts here say the volcano park not only adds a scenic spot to the tourist attractions of the province, but also will serve as a center for the study of volcanoes and for popular science education. |
