China has kicked off a project to clone over 50 kinds of rare plants found in the Three Gorges Dam area in the country's southwest.

The China Youth Daily reports that by 2003, over 600 square kilometers of land will be under water.

In order to protect rare plants found in the area, scientists have decided to clone them.

The paper says the cloning process will take one to two months.

It says cloning can dramatically increase the number of plants£¬ and also raise their survival rate.
