Argentina Satisfied With EU Measures on Agricultural Production

Argentina has welcomed measures adopted by the European Union (EU) toward the promotion of agricultural production.

The measures are in line with Argentina's demand for opening more international markets for Argentine products, said Foreign Minister Adalberto Rodriguez Giavarini in Buenos Aires Monday.

He also expressed satisfaction in his last meetings with the ministers of agriculture of the 15-nation bloc on reforms and the future of European agriculture.

The minister underscored the "excellent position" of Argentina' s agricultural production in the world market, healthy cattle feeding and strict sanitary measures practiced in the country.

Meanwhile, he expressed concern over the "possibility that a sudden reduction in European market demand could generate an excess amount of meat. This excess could be re-exported with the assistance of subsidies to other markets, or serve as 'donations' to developing countries."

The crisis, which could depress prices, would harm Argentina's agriculture and economy, he warned.
