Global E-ID Awareness Campaign Starts in HK

A campaign for the global electronic identification (e-ID) numbers was initiated Tuesday to reinforce the general awareness of it and to promote its use among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Hong Kong.

Funded by the government's Innovation and Technology Fund and launched by the Hong Kong Article Numbering Association, the year-long campaign will introduce a series of exhibitions, industry seminars and workshops, website, videos and publications.

It will also select a number of SMEs to take part in a program to demonstrate the business advantages of global e-ID in the universal supply chain management and efficient trade practices.

Global e-ID is a globally recognized numbering and bar-coding system to identify products, services, shipments and locations.

According to Logan Taylor, chairman of the association, trading partners, ranging from manufacturers and distributors to logistic service providers and retailers, can capture product's data accurately by using automatic data capture technologies to speed up product handling and information processing right along the supply chain.

Taylor said that the establishment of global e-ID aims to offer a global, effective and cost-efficient trading solution to further enhance Hong Kong's trading competitiveness and develop its e-

commerce capacity.

According to Taylor, a group of SMEs has been selected from a specific range of sectors including retailing, manufacturing, wholesaling and logistic service to participate in the program.
