World Seeds Giant Sees Booming Business in China

As the first China-based subsidiary of Novartis Group, the world-famous Swiss farming seeds giant, Shouguang Novartis Seeds Co., Ltd. has seen fruitful returns since it started its' business in 1998.

Located in Shouguang, in east China's Shandong Province, the Novartis subsidiary has introduced a variety of high quality vegetables to China, such as colorful tomatoes and European short cucumbers, most of which have been quite popular on the Chinese market.

With each kilogram of colorful sweet peppers sold at 20 yuan, Xia Zhongwei, a local farmer, benefits greatly from Novartis.

"Although I have grown sweet peppers for over 10 years, I have found no one who can match the Novartis type. They not only look nice, but taste delicious," Xia said excitedly.

"Shouguang is taking a firm lead in the Chinese vegetables industry and has established a nationwide marketing system. That's why we choose to establish a Novartis base here," said Stethen Scoones, general manager of the subsidiary.

Chinese farmers show a strong desire to learn advanced agricultural technologies and managing methods, and are eager to introduce more new types of crops, which indicates China's agriculture is expecting a great potential, Scoones said.

Novartis has tried to popularize hundreds of types of high quality vegetables, selling their seeds to most parts of China, noted Scoones.

He also expressed Novartis is prepared to do more to help improve the quality of vegetables across China.
