China to Deepen Reform in Cultural AdministrationChinese Minister of Culture Sun Jiazheng said Tuesday that his ministry will push forward the structural reform inside the cultural administrative bodies. After years of efforts made by cultural workers, some obstacles still exist in effective administering the cultural circles, Sun said at an ongoing annual cultural work conference. The administrative bodies should loosen their control on arts groups and cultural agencies, said Sun. Meanwhile, a mechanism of competitiveness must be cultivated inside the cultural organizations. Intermediary organs such as cultural agencies and artistic appraisal bodies are encouraged to play a more active role in the socialist market economy. Sun urged the arts groups directly affiliated to his ministry to create more outstanding cultural products. The administrative bodies should stimulate and standardize the performance market. Sun said that China must speed up its development in cultural industries and make better preparation for the country's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO). The ministry plans to establish Chinese cultural centers separately in Malta and the Republic of Korea, in a bid to bolster the influence of Chinese culture.
