Around 100 Giant Pandas Found in Gansu Province

According to an initial estimation, the third field survey of giant pandas concluded recently has resulted in discovering about 100 giant pandas living in Gansu Province.

The survey was as reported conducted in 55 counties and 33 giant panda nature reserves of Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. Some nine counties of Gansu Province were taken in the research program, covering an area of 395,000 hectares. The number of giant pandas in Gansu as introduced by person concerned has seen an increase in a small way and their habitats are also slightly expanded as compared with the result of last time.

The number of giant pandas in Gansu has always been remaining at one tenth of China's total since 1995. Besides, their habitats have also extended to new areas like Diebu County in south Gansu never reported to have any trace of giant pandas before.

It's learned that the environment in wilderness, weather conditions, qualification of research staff and some other factors, all this may affect the preciseness of the survey. Though a further analysis and processing of relevant data is needed, yet an estimation on the conservative side shows that there should be about 100 giant pandas within Gansu Province.

Report: Over 1,000 Pandas in China

Recent investigations show there are currently over 1,000 giant pandas alive in China, the nation's highest forestry authorities announced Thursday in Beijing.

According to the State Forestry Administration's numbers, by the end of last year, the number of giant pandas raised in captivity in China had surpassed 110. Captive pandas gave birth to 20 cubs in 2000, 18 of which are alive.
