France to Extradite ETA Member to Spain

France will extradite on Tuesday a purported ETA member, Ignacio Etxeberria, for trial in Spain for his participation in two car bombings that left six people dead, Spanish judicial authorities said Monday.

Etxeberria, also known as "Mortadelo," is identified as a member of the Madrid command of the terrorist Basque separatist organization ETA between 1991 and 1994.

France will extradite him for his involvement in a car bombing on February 6, 1992, which killed five people who were inside a military vehicle in the Madrid Cruz Verde square.

He will also be tried in the National Audience of Spain for his participation on March 23, 1992, in the murder of Juan Jose Carrasco Guerrero, the 26-year-old son of the army reserve infantry colonel, Felix Manuel Carrasco, in a Puente de Segovia roundabout, with a bomb planted beneath his father's car.

Etxeberria was arrested on February 12, 1996, in a supermarket in Pountville in Brittany, northwest France.
