No Solution of Iraqi Issue Through Military ApproachMalaysian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar said Monday that the use of military force against Iraq was no longer appropriate and a long term solution to the problems related to Iraq must be found. The US and British air strikes near Baghdad last Friday only brought more sufferings to the Iraqi people, Syed Hamid told reporters after meeting East Timor religious leader Bishop Carlos Felipe Ximenes Belo here. The military approach would not help in efforts to overcome the problems faced by the Iraqi people, he said, adding "We feel that is not the way, and we are always of the view that anything done must be in accordance with UN procedures and international law." He also said the continued economic sanctions against Iraq since 1990 had only caused the Iraqi people, especially children and women,to suffer but failed to resolve the problems that existed. He said Malaysia, which was a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council recently, had played an active role in trying to get the sanctions lifted. |
