Rain-Triggered Landslides Kill 16 in Philippines

At least 16 people were killed when landslides triggered by torrential rains in the central and southern Philippines buried their homes, the civil defense office said on Monday.

Seventeen other people were injured in the weekend disasters in hillside villages on the central island of Leyte and in two provinces on the southern island of Mindanao, it said.

The heavy rains, spawned by a tropical depression, flooded the homes of 100,000 residents in 29 towns, a civil defense statement said. About 2,000 of the residents took refuge in government evacuation centers.

In a separate incident, an inter-island ferry ran aground in the coastal town of Baybay in Leyte, the coastguard said. All 181 people on board were rescued, a statement said.
