Inner Mongolia Returns Banned Animal Products to Mongolia

Erenhot City, located in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and bordering the Republic of Mongolia, has returned artiodactyl products to Mongolia.

Artiodactyls are cloven-footed animals.

Incorrect news reports in Mongolia at the end of last year claimed that China had lifted the prohibition on the imports of artiodactyl products from the country, which resulted in large amounts of related products flowing into China through the border city.

All the 14 rail waggonloads of such cargo were stopped at the border by the local customs bureau, and all the products have been disinfected. At the same time, the local authorities held negotiations with Mongolia on stopping further exports of such products to China.

China implemented the prohibition on artiodactyl product imports from Mongolia in May last year when a foot-and-mouth epidemic resulted in the death of millions of animals in the neighboring country.

The blister-causing foot-and-mouth disease comes from by a highly communicable virus which quickly spreads to artiodactyls through the air, fodder or by being tramped from area to area.
