Chinese, German Military Leaders Hold Talks


Zhang Wannian Hold Welcoming Ceremony in Honor of German Defense Minister
The Chinese government attaches great importance to developing relations with Germany, said Zhang Wannian, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission, Sunday.

In talks with German Minister of Defense Rudolf Scharping, Zhang said that the bilateral relations have been growing, and the cooperation between the two countries in various areas has been fruitful in recent years.

Zhang noted that Scharping's current visit to China is the first one by a German defense minister since the two countries established diplomatic ties.

Scharping's visit is very important, Zhang said, adding that he believed the visit would certainly deepen the friendly cooperation between the two countries and their armed forces.

Z hang also briefed Scharping on China's views on the world situation, including that in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as on China's foreign policy, economic development and defense.

He reiterated China's principled position on the Taiwan issue, saying that the Chinese government will adhere to the principle of "peaceful reunification, and one country and two systems."

Zhang stressed that China will never change its one-China principle on the Taiwan issue.

He said that the central government certainly has both sincerity in solving the issue of reunification of the motherland and the confidence, determination and capability to solve the Taiwan issue through resolute means under certain conditions.

Zhang thanked Germany for its adherence to the one-China principle.

Scharping said that China plays an important in role both regional and global issues. He added that it is important for all nations, including members the European Union that includes Germany, to develop relations with China.

He said that Germany is willing to expand its cooperation with China in areas of security and military affairs and reiterated that Germany will continue to stick to the one-China principle.

Prior to the talks, Zhang held a welcoming ceremony for Scharping, who arrived here Sunday morning for a four-day official good-will visit.
