US Should Revise Its Iraq Policy, Says France

The present policy maintained by Washington and London toward Iraq is not clearly directed and should be revised, French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine said Monday.

"What we wait from the new (US) government is a redefinition of its Iraq policy, because there are clear proofs that the present policy does not work," said Vedrine in an interview with French television LCI.

"We have expressed our position several times that there is no international legal basis for this kind of air raid," clearly referring to the US-British air raids launched against Baghdad last Friday.

He also asked to halt sanctions against Baghdad, citing humanitarian reasons.

"The sanctions do not work well either. It is the people that suffer and we demand an end to it."

Friday's air attack was the first against the Iraqi capital Baghdad in two years. It was also the first military action ordered by U.S. President George W. Bush against Washington's enemy Iraq since Bush took office in January.
