Malaysia Condemns Air Attacks on Iraq

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad Sunday condemned the bombings of Iraq by British and the United States warplanes on Friday.

"I am saddened by the raids as I have high expectations of the new US administration," he said in Shah Alam near here after a function when commenting on the bombings of areas around the Iraqi capital city of Baghdad, which reportedly killed two and injured 20 civilians.

He said the new US administration under President George W. Bush should have been allowed time to study the policies of the previous government on issues relating to Iraq.

Mahathir said he is saddened further by the fact that the air raids were launched purportedly for humanitarian reasons, but what was clear was that the raids they launched "caused civilian fatalities and injuries not to soldiers."

"I didn't know that killing people is humanitarian," Mahathir said.
