Cuba Condemns Air Strike Against Iraq

Cuban condemned Saturday the US and British air strike against Iraq and demanded lifting the sanctions of the United Nations Security Council against Iraq.

In a communique, the Foreign Ministry rejected the arguments justifying the attack as a self defense action by the United States and Britain, saying the attack occurred in the moment when the international community calls for an immediate lifting of sanctions imposed on Iraq.

It said that every time the issue is about to be discussed in the Security Council, "it turns into a hostage of the threat of the use of veto power by the United States."

It reiterated Cuba's solidarity with the "beleaguered Iraqi people."

US and British warplanes launched air raids on targets south of Baghdad on the evening of February 16, causing civilian casualties.
