Italian Politicians Condemn US Hegemonism

Italian politicians condemned on Saturday US and British air strikes against Iraq as an unjustified and hegemonic action.

Achille Occhetto, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, said that US air strike against Baghdad was a hegemonic action, which bypassed the United Nations and could not be justified.

Chairman of the Italian Communist Party Armando Cossutta slashed the U.S air raid against Baghdad and urged the Italian government to lodge a formal protest.

"Bush is not and will never be the master of the world," said Cossutta, adding that Europe should express its own views and sanctions against Iraq should be lifted immediately.

Valdo Spini, chairman of the Defense Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, pointed out that the United States had neither informed nor consulted with the European allies about the air raid beforehand, which underlined the necessity to build up a European defense system so as to balance the relationship between the United States and Europe.
