Pakistan Concerned Over US-British Air Strikes Against Iraq

Pakistan on Saturday expressed deep concern at the recent US-British air strikes against Iraqi installations near Baghdad.

"Pakistan is deeply concerned at the recent US-British air strikes against Iraqi installations in the vicinity of Baghdad and deplores civilian casualties and loss of property," said a statement issued by the Pakistani Foreign Ministry on Saturday.

"Pakistan calls for an immediate halt to such air strikes which are in violation of international law and are not mandated by the UN Security Council," the statement said.

The statement called for the preservation of Iraq's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

It also called for "the alleviation of the sufferings of the Iraqi people, through a review of the continuing sanctions against Iraq, which are causing great hardship to the Iraqi people."

The US-British air strikes were conducted at the night of February 16, in which eight civilians were wounded and properties damaged.
