Protected Jacanas Wintering in Tainan CountyOver 10 protected pheasant- tailed jacanas are presently spending the winter in Taiwan's first jacana preservation area in Tainan County, a Taiwanese media reported Saturday.A local agricultural expert was cited as saying that the water level in the preservation area will be adjusted to bring in more jacanas and to prevent an invasion of black-winged stilts, a common wading bird that competes with the jacana for food but requires slightly different water levels to thrive. The county authorities set aside a 15-acre plot of land in 1999 as a base for the jacana preservation area in Kuantien, Tainan County, to ensure that the ecology of the area will not be damaged when the high-speed railway system project begins operations. A total of 50 to 60 pheasant-tailed jacanas have taken up residence in Tainan's Shinying, Shiaying and Kuantien areas, the expert said. |
