Sudanese President Al-Bashir Visits Ethiopia

Sudanese President Omar Hassan Al-Bashir arrived in Mekele, Ethiopia Saturday to attend the 26th founding anniversary of the ruling Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF).

Upon his arrival in Mekele, about 600 km north of Addis Ababa, Al-Bashir was welcomed by Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and other Ethiopian government ministers, the Ethiopian News Agency reported.

The TPLF, founded in 1989, is the biggest political party in Ethiopia. It became the ruling party when Mengistu Haile-Mariam and his regime was overthrown in May 1991.

The official celebrations of the founding of the TPLF will begin on Sunday.

The relations between Ethiopia and Sudan have been remarkably improved since 1998 when the two countries agreed to join hands to fight against anti-government forces that were operating along the borders of the two countries.
