Jordan Condemns US-British Air Raids on IraqHundreds of Jordanians staged demonstrations at the Iraqi Embassy in Amman on Saturday evening, protesting against US-British air strikes against Baghdad on Friday evening. The demonstrators chanted pro-Iraqi people slogans and burned Israeli and US flags. They also handed over a document to the Iraqi charge d'affaires in Amman, voicing their support for Iraqi people and condemning the air raids and embargo on Iraq. Two were killed and 20 others wounded in the air raids, the first on Baghdad since December 1998 when the US and Britain launched a four-day bombardment against Iraq for its alleged refusal to cooperate with UN arms inspectors. The Pentagon claimed that the air strike was launched in retaliation for increased Iraqi activity against coalition planes in the no-fly zones imposed on Baghdad following the 1991 Gulf War. Iraq has been under international sanctions since it invaded Kuwait in 1990.
