Japan Wins Beijing International Ekiden

Japan took an easy win in the Beijing International Ekiden women's international group on Sunday with a time of two hours 16 minutes and 43 seconds.

Ethiopia finished second in the 42.195km road race around the inner circle of the Beijing city, timing 2:18:12, while defending champions China won the third place with a time of 2:18:35.

China, who had won four out of the past five titles except in 1997, failed to claim the competition for the fourth successive time.

Ethiopia set off first in the opening five kilometers before Japan took the lead when they past Fuxingmen and ran for the final victory.

"It's an easy win. I'd not expected such a big margin to win the race," said Akiko Dawachima, who sprinted for the win.
