Shanghai Bell to Hire 1,500 Staff In China

More than 6,000 people in Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai Saturday submitted their applications to Shanghai Bell Co., vying in person or on-line for the 1,500 job opportunities offered by the telecommunications giant.

A long-distance videotex system enabled those outside Shanghai to apply for the vacancies via computer.

Fan Jun, a student at Tongji University majoring in information and control, said, "All of my 60 classmates have come to the company today. We all want to try our luck at getting jobs, as the company is in the leading position in China's telecommunication industry."

Li Wei, an applicant from Xi'an, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, had just wrapped up an on-line interview. "The long-distance interview is really interesting. It is new and efficient, and it makes me want to get the job even more."

Sixteen of the 20 people in Beijing and Xi'an who were interviewed Saturday were hired by Shanghai Bell.

The new recruits will work in research and development, and marketing.

Shanghai Bell Co. Chairman Xi Guohua said, "Whoever gets talented professionals wins in market competition. So, our success depends on these talented people."

Xi said that the company would focus on information this year, and has set up six departments dealing with this area.

Shanghai Bell plans to increase its sales volume from last year 's US$1 billion to US$3 billion by 2005, becoming one of the world's top 50 telecom companies. By then it will have 12,000 employees; it currently has 3,500.
