Yugoslavia Condemns Bomb Attack on Serbs in Kosovo
Yugoslavia on Friday strongly condemned the bomb attack on a convoy of buses carrying Serbs in the northern Kosovar city of Podujevo, and called for an emergency session of the U.N. Security Council.
"The Security Council should condemn the violence and take concrete measures for the protection of civilians and put a stop to further perishing in the southern Serbian province," said the Yugoslav government in a statement after its special session.
At noon on Friday, ethnic Albanian armed forces launched a bomb attack on a bus carrying Serbs traveling from the southeastern Serb city of Nis to Podujevo, killing 10 Serbs and seriously wounding more than 40 others.
In the statement, the Yugoslav government also called on the NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR) and U.N. Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) to react strongly, in line with U.N. Resolution 1244, and ensure the personal safety and basic human rights of all the residents in Kosovo.
Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica also voiced his anger at the attack and concern about the situation in Kosovo.
"The innocent victims show once again how evil and how disastrous to regional stability are the plans and intentions of ethnic Albanian extremists who stop at nothing in their efforts to further destabilize the situation," Kostunica said in a statement.
Kostunica stressed that the international community must eventually realize who are the true enemies to peace in Kosovo and the Balkans, and both the KFOR and UNMIK should carry out their mandates in full.
"This is the only way to prevent Kosovo becoming a monoethnic Mafia enclave, ruled by violence and intimidation," the statement said.
The Yugoslav parliament and the Serbian government also held special sessions and condemned the violence conducted by ethnic Albanian terrorists in Podujevo.
