Chinese President Meets Japanese Trade Union Delegation
Chinese President Jiang Zemin met with Washio Etsuya, president of the Japanese Trade Union Confederation, Friday afternoon.

Jiang said the trade unions of both countries have made positive contributions to the normalization of diplomatic relations,the signing of the China-Japan Peace and Friendship Treaty, and the promotion of bilateral friendship over the past years.

Looking into the new century, friendly contacts between the Chinese and Japanese trade unions should be further reinforced as overall bilateral ties have entered a new development era, Jiang said, urging trade unions of both sides to strive for better cooperation.

China and Japan, both important countries of the Asia-Pacific region, shoulder the common task of safeguarding peace and promoting development, said the president. Therefore, he continued, both should try to deepen mutual understanding and trust by using the past as a mirror and looking forward to the future in accordance with principles contained in relevant documents.

He expressed the hope that trade union leaders would carry on the traditional friendship and promote communication between trade unions and workers of the two countries so as to accelerate bilateral friendship in the new century.

Etsuya said there had been a miserable period in the history in bilateral relations, a time the Japanese side should review carefully.

Relations between Chinese and Japanese trade unions have witnessed continuous progress in recent years, he said, adding the Japanese trade unions are willing to strengthen cooperation with the All-China Federation of Trade Unions to promote bilateral friendship of the new century.
