Canadian Data Retriever Eyes Chinese Market

CBL Data Recovery Technologies Inc, a Canadian data company, is in talks with the State Information Center to set up a joint venture, the company announced Wednesday in Beijing.

"Data recovery is in increasing demand in China, as more and more people are using PCs," said Tim Margeson, a CBL official. He is a member of the visiting Canadian delegation headed by Prime Minister Jean Chretien.

"We can retrieve data from bad tape backups, hard drive, optical media and removable media, even from such physically damaged discs as sustained in fire," he said.

In China, except for a firm in Guangdong, there are few companies specializing in data recovery. A handful of Chinese companies can deal with data loss caused by viruses, but they are at wit's end over physically damaged discs.

"CBL has better technology," said Ye Hong, deputy director of the State Information Center. "We are set to learn a lot from it."

According to CBL, most employees of the joint venture will be Chinese who are to be trained by CBL.
