Philippine Vice President Takes over Foreign Secretaryship

Philippine Vice President Teofisto Guingona was warmly welcome Friday in the building of the Department of Foreign Affairs where he officially takes over foreign affairs secretaryhip.

In his remarks at the ceremonies, Guingona set his two-pronged administrative style: economic diplomacy in foreign affairs and in- house careerism and public service.

This will be defined by the motto, "the public first and foremost," he said.

Guingona is an Mindanaoan to become vice president and foreign secretary. The welcome ceremony was attended by members of diplomatic corps and personnel in the department.

In a press conference that followed the ceremonies, Guingona said that in support of his plan for conflict-stricken Mindanao, he will exert efforts to secure US$100 million in funds from Muslims countries.

Guingona, president of the ruling party Lakas-NUCD, was sworn in as vice president and foreign secretary earlier this month.
