Tibetology Study Flourishing in China

Tibetology Study Flourishing in China
The delegation of Chinese Tibetologists February 13 held a news conference in Washington. Lhakpa Phuntsog, secretary-general of China Tibetology Research Center, also former vice-chairman of the government of Tibet Autonomous Region and former head of the Tibet Academy of Social Sciences, briefed on the study of Tibetology in China.

A fact to be noted is that unprecedented successes, especially in recent years, have been scored in Tibetology study in China. Lhakpa Phunsog told that a great number of experts and scholars highly accomplished in the field have appeared and many of their scientific research achievements have filled in academic gaps in the study of Tibetology.

There are already over 50 institutions and more than 2,000 experts and scholars and a dozen of academic publications in Tibetan language, Chinese and English in circulation going in for the study of Tibetology in China. Extensive academic exchanges and cooperation have been carried out by Tibetologists in China and abroad.

Tibetology study institutions in China are reported to hold the Third Beijing International Tibetology Meeting on July this year to promote more academic exchanges between Chinese and foreign Tibetologists since the Ge Saer Forum, the International Tibetan Medicine and Pharmacology Forum and several others having been successfully held. In the past 20 and more years, China's Tibetology study institutions have had several thousand academic theses and hundreds of important academic monographs published and near 100 works on Tibetology study translated, Lhakpa Phuntsog said.

When talking about Tibetology study in China in the new century, Lhakpa Phuntsog predicted a basic change that will be made in its aim from a study of historical documents and other related materials to studying into social economy and efforts for improved life and a prosperous culture in Tibet.

Lhakpa Phuntsog also expressed the hope that Chinese Tibetologists will have more opportunities and exchanges for developing cooperation with their foreign counterparts and friends who have an interest in Tibet.

At the news conference, the delegation also answered questions of reporters on Tibet's history and current status and the influence to be found on Tibet from Western China's development.
