South China City to Increase Exports

Authorities of Guangzhou, one of China's major southern gateways to the outside world, hope to score an average eight percent rise in exports in the tenth five-year-plan period (2001-2005).

Jiang Houxi, director of the Guangzhou City Commission for Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, said the city would concentrate efforts on foreign trade restructuring, with the priority going to the implementation of a policy to rejuvenate foreign trade through science and technology during the tenth five-year-plan period.

While continuing to support large companies in exporting traditional commodities in bulk, the city will make greater effort to export more commodities featuring in-depth processing, high added value and high technology, Jiang said.

The city will also encourage local companies to start processing businesses or to contract projects overseas in a bid to help the city's export of locally-produced commodities.

Guangzhou, also capital of Guangdong Province, exported 11.82 billion U.S. dollars worth of commodities last year, up 19.8 percent over 1999.
