Chairman Li Peng of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC) met with Kazuo Inamori, honorary president of Kyocera Corporation of Japan, Thursday.

The Kyocera Corporation, a high-tech firm known worldwide, recently donated 1 million U.S. dollars to fund a scholarship for students of western China in response to China's strategy of developing its western areas.

Li highly appreciated Inamori's generous contribution to the educational development of China's west and the promotion of communication between youths of the two countries, voicing the hope such activity would reap satisfactory results.

Through concerted efforts of people from both the governmental and non-governmental circles of the two countries, China-Japan cooperation in politics, economy, science and technology, culture, education and environment protection has all registered remarkable progress, Li said, pointing out China and Japan should complement their respective advantages and carry out mutually beneficial cooperation in the economic and technical spheres.

He also called on the Japanese non-governmental sector to pass on the traditional Sino-Japanese friendship, particularly to educate the younger generation about the importance of maintaining such a friendship.

Inamori spoke highly of the great achievements China has made since it launched the reform and opening-up drive, and expressed the willingness to contribute to China's western development strategy. He voiced the hope that more talented personnel would soon grow up to serve for the development of western China.

He also expressed the hope that Japan and China would reinforce cooperation to establish a friendly relationship based on mutual trust.
