Constitutional Accusation Against Fujimori ApprovedA Congressional commission Tuesday approved the first constitutional accusation of dereliction against former president Alberto Fujimori.The constitutional accusation was approved by the Permanent Commission with 13 votes for, nine against, and no abstentions, following a debate whether former president Fujimori should be prosecuted for dereliction of duty for resigning by fax from Tokyo in November last year. Fujimori was accused of violating articles 38 and 118 of the Constitution for resigning from Tokyo last November 19 and was urged to come back to explain his departure from the country. Parliamentarian Daniel Estrada from Unity for Peru said there is another pending denunciation against Fujimori for crimes against public administration. According to the congressional regulation, when the Permanent Commission rules in favor of accusation, formal charges against Fujimori would be drawn up for vote at the full Congress. |
