HK Sees Population Growth of 1.5 Percent in 2000

Hong Kong saw a population growth rate of 1.5 percent in 2000, according to statistics released Thursday by the Census and Statistics Department.

The provisional figure for the end-2000 population of Hong Kong was 6,865,600, an increase of 104,000 persons as compared with the end-1999 population, representing a growth rate of 1.5 percent.

There were 54,200 births and 33,300 deaths in Hong Kong last year. The natural increase thus amounted to 20,900, accounting for 20 percent of the population growth.

During the same period, the net movement of Hong Kong residents showed a net inflow of some 83,100 persons, constituting 80 percent of the population growth. Of the 6,865,600 persons within the end-2000 Hong Kong population, 6,680,500 were usual residents and 185,100 were mobile residents.
