International Conference on Bluetooth Technology Scheduled

An international conference for exchanges in bluetooth technology, the world's latest wireless telecommunications know-how, will be held in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, on March 1-2.

Bluetooth technology uses low-power radio waves to eliminate the usual tangle of wires and cables. It was initially used in printers, keyboards, computers and some cellular phones, and has gradually been applied to home appliances and other electronic devices.

Bluetooth, named after Harald Bluetooth, a 10th century Viking king of Denmark, was developed by the Swedish technology group Ericsson in 1994.

A special interest group with the purposes of promoting the academic research, development of the technology, and for setting relevant rules and regulations and marketing related products, was founded in 1998 and has now found a membership of over 2,000, including Microsoft, Intel, IBM, and Lucent. A dozen members of the bluetooth technology organization are also distributed in the Chinese mainland.

The conference, the first of its kind in China, will feature seminars, exhibition of the bluetooth technology products and demonstration, and corporate exchanges among domestic and overseas businesses. It will be sponsored by Guangzhou City Commission of Science and Technology, in cooperation with a local company.

It is estimated that some 500 representatives from the world over, including bluetooth technology experts from Motorola and Nokia will attend the meeting.
