Canadian PM Leaves Shanghai for Hong Kong

Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien left Shanghai Thursday evening for his next leg of China visit -- Hong Kong, after staying in this east China commercial center.

Accompanied by Shanghai Deputy Mayor Zhou Yupeng, Chretien delivered a speech at the East China College of Political Science and Law in the morning. He also walked through the campus of the college and took pictures with Chinese students.

The prime minister attended a contract-signing ceremony here in the afternoon.

Invited by Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji, Chretien kicked off his official China visit last Saturday. This is his fourth visit to China.

Chinese leaders Jiang Zemin and Li Peng met Chretien on separate occasions during his visit in Beijing. Premier Zhu Rongji held talks with the Canadian prime minister.

Chretien's entourage signed with their Chinese counterparts business deals worth 5.3 billion Canadian dollars (about 3.47 billion U.S. dollars) Tuesday.
