Hungary, China Agree to Further Cooperative Ties

Chinese State Councilor Wu Yi and Hungarian Foreign Minister Martonyi Janos agreed Wednesday in Budapest to further strengthen and develop the cooperative ties between the two countries.

Martonyi told Wu Yi, who looks after China's trade and economic ties with foreign countries, that Hungary is interested in joining the Chinese government's efforts to develop the western region of China.

The Hungarian foreign minister said that Hungary is willing to continue to work for the development of Hungarian-Chinese relations, which he said are built on a solid base. China plays an increasingly important role in world political and economic life and is a major constructive partner of Hungary, he said.

Wu Yi, who arrived here earlier Wednesday, said during the meeting that China and Hungary enjoy a special bilateral relationship. Although the two countries' social systems and roads of development are different, she said, she believes the difference will not affect the development of bilateral relations.

The Chinese state councilor said that Hungary is a major country in central and eastern Europe. China pays great attention to its trade ties and economic cooperation with Hungary, China's largest trade partner in the region, she said.

The establishment of a long-term and stable cooperative relationship between China and Hungary conforms to the interests of both countries, Wu said.

Hungary is the second leg of Wu's 18-day five-nation European tour, which has already taken her to Slovakia. From Hungary, she will travel to Croatia, Slovenia and Romania.

She left Beijing on February 11.
