US, British Jets Bomb Southern Iraq

US and British warplanes bombed targets in southern Iraq, the US Central Command said Wednesday.

A statement by the US Central Command said US and British warplanes launched the attack at 9:15 p.m. local time (18:15 GMT) and all planes returned safely to their bases.

US warplanes used precision-guided weapons against a Iraqi surface-to-air missile site in southern Iraq, the statement said.

"The attack Tuesday night was in response to recent Iraqi violations of United Nations Security Council resolutions," the statement said.

An Iraqi military spokesman, quoted by the official Iraqi News Agency INA, confirmed the attack without mentioning whether there were any casualties.
