IMF, World Bank Chiefs to Visit Africa
Heads of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) will make a first-ever joint trip to Africa next week to discuss economic issues with African leaders, officials of the two lending institutions said on Wednesday.
The visit reaffirms a pledge made last year by both institutions to put Africa at the center of their activities and aims at a departure from the way Africa was dealt with in the past, the officials said.
They added that the trip is also designed to demonstrate how close the two institutions are in dealing with issues in Africa.
World Bank President James Wolfensohn and IMF Managing Director Horst Koehler will begin their visit in Bamako, Mali on Sunday where they will meet with leaders of West and Central African nations.
They will then travel to Nigeria and Tanzania, where they are expected to meet with 10 heads of state from Southern and East Africa. They conclude their trip with a one-day stop in Kenya.
