China Announces Progress in Developing World's Largest Radio Telescope
A scale model of the reflection plane of a 500-m-caliber radio telescope passed an acceptance test Wednesday, marking a breakthrough in China's attempt to develop the world's largest radio telescope.
The one-third size model was designed by the prestigious
Tongji University
and the Nanjing Center for Chronometer Equipment.
Experts said that the scale model of a reflection plane is one of the three key technologies needed to develop the world's largest radio telescope.
They said that development of the other two key technologies is currently making smooth headway at a number of institutes in
Beijing
and Xi'an.
According to the experts, the telescope will be located in an area as large as 40 soccer fields, and its caliber will be some 70 percent wider than that of the current world's largest telescope.
