Shenzhen: High-tech Industries in Top GearShenzhen Mayor Yu Youjun pledged Monday to expand high-tech industries in the next five years in a bid to add to the city's edge in this regard.Yu made the pledge Monday during group discussions among delegates from Shenzhen who were attending the ongoing fourth session of the Ninth Guangdong Provincial People's Congress held in Guangzhou, the provincial capital. The mayor said that they would also work harder to score new progress in economic development, social information promotion and modernization in the 10th Five-Year-Plan period (2001-2005). While using high and new technologies to equip and upgrade traditional industries, Shenzhen, one of the country's five special economic zones, will also make greater effort to develop finance, logistics and information services. It will adopt preferential policies to attract qualified personnel. High-tech industries generated more than 100 billion yuan (US$12.05 billion) worth of output value in Shenzhen last year, creating more than 2.84 billion yuan (US$342 million) in taxes. The city had a 39.4 percent rise in exports of high-tech commodities last year, compared with 1999. |
