China's Railway Sector to Reap Record Income

The Ministry of Railways is expecting a record income from ticket sales during this year's Spring Festival.

Latest figures with the Ministry said that between January 9 and February 11, when most college students had returned to campus, the railway sector carried 108 million passengers, 0.8 percent more than the same period last year.

This year's 40-day transportation peak will officially end on February 17.

During the first 12 days of the peak period, income from tickets nationwide came to 158 million yuan, 37 million yuan per day, or an increase of 31.1 percent year-on-year.

Beijing Railway Station and Beijing West Railway Station sold some 300 million yuan in tickets during the first 15 days, doubling the income of the entire period last year.

On normal working days, the railways transport some 2.3 million passengers around the country. But during the Spring Festival, the figure is easily doubled.
