Governmental Support for Southeast China University Growth

The Southeast China University, one of the key higher learning institutes in China, has got strong financial support from both central and local governments for its further development.

Under an agreement signed here later Monday, the Ministry of Education and the Jiangsu provincial government will each allocate 300 million yuan (US$36 million) for the university's development in the next three years.

More money may be offered if the university has achieved satisfying results in the three years, officials said.

The governmental financial support is aimed at helping the university develop into a nurturing base of talented personnel for economic growth in east China.

The university, under the administration of the ministry, has so far set up nine postdoctoral programs, 64 doctoral programs, and 104 programs for the master's degree.

It boasts more than 20 national and provincial research labs, and has won over 500 national and provincial prizes for scientific and technological research in the past decade.
