"Clean-Fingered Wives" Selected to Guard against Husbands' Corruption

Major mass media in east China's Jiangxi province on Tuesday made public the names of 60 " clean-fingered wives" candidates and their government official husbands, marking the beginning of its first clean and honest wives competition.

A source with the provincial women's federation told Xinhua that the preparation for the competition began last September and the candidates were first nominated by various units and then selected by a special group.

The purpose of the activity is to encourage wives of government officials to help prevent their husbands from being corrupted, the source said.

Chinese wives traditionally play an important role in influencing their husbands' behaviors. A recent survey showed that many officials' corruption crimes had much to do with their wives.

"We hope this competition will make a contribution to the current fight against corruption," a local women's federation official said.
