Nortel Signs US$263m Network Contracts

Canada-based telecom equipment provider Nortel Networks has got deeper into China's telecom network infrastructure with the signing of network contracts worth a total value of US$263 million with major Chinese telecom operators.

China Telecom, the country's major fixed-line telecom provider, yesterday signed an agreement with Nortel Networks for China's largest ever optical contract.

Estimated to be worth US$101 million, the network will become the most modern fixed-line telecom network in the world.

"China's largest ever optical network will surpass any commercial telecom network in operation," said Robert Mao, president of Nortel Networks China.

The next generation optical network will span key regions of North, South and Southwest China, providing China Telecom with massive bandwidth, high levels of intelligence and the industry's lowest costs.

Besides co-operation with the fixed-line telecom provider, Nortel Networks also signed contracts with the country's dual mobile telecom operators.

China Mobile and China Unicom have separately awarded Nortel Networks with contracts worth US$130 million and US$32 million for the expansion of GSM (global systems for mobile communication) networks in Shaanxi, Zhejiang and Heilongjiang provinces.

Nortel Networks has contributed to many of the country's national and regional optical fibre networks, digital cellular networks, ISDN (integrated service digital network) networks and broadband multimedia networks.
