Beijing to Build First Garbage Combustion Power Plant
The State Development Planning Commission has been approved to build the first garbage-combustion power plant in Beijing, according to reliable sources. The biggest garbage treatment power plant in China will soon rise on the ground at Gaoantun, Chaoyang District of Beijing. It is as estimated able to treat over 1,300 tons of garbage per day and in the meantime generate 136 million kwh of electricity annually.
Rubbish incineration proves to be an effective way for the treatment of city wastes. To reduce waste pollution and generate power, it is an effective method widely adopted by many developed countries in the world. Beijing has a population of 13 million, turning out more than four million tons of living garbage annually. The said project is planned to make an investment of 680 million yuan and will be put into production by the end of 2002.
According to Pan Jinlong, general manager of the company undertaking this project, the component of the city's garbage has kept changing since the extensive use of natural and coal gas. The reducing of coal use lessened the incombustible component and increased the calorific value from waste incineration. At present, the heat produced from waste incineration is increased from the previous 800 per kilogram of garbage to 1,400 kcal, which is quite suitable for building a garbage-based power plant.
